Name of Workshop: The Fundamentals of DJ'ing

Workshop Description: This fundamental workshop delivers an applied and hands-on approach to Djing and music creation relevant to the current music marketplace. The students will learn to construct and perform a variety of DJ “sets” and techniques using popular music and platforms such as Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music and Youtube. This workshop will explain the essential components of a “set” that include beat matching, rhythms, sampling, groove looping and audio effects by analyzing both classic rhythmic and music theory and DJ programing exercises. Students will also become familiar with creating and manipulating DJ “sets” with digital software DJ platforms and instruments within an iphone/smart phone and iPad/tablet.

Workshop Outcomes:

Successful completion of this workshop will enable the student to:

Name of Workshop: Expanding Creativity - Through Improvisational Music

Total Hours: 2

Workshop Description: This appreciation workshop uses a practical approach to teaching improvisational music. Students “Do Not Need To Be Musicians” to take this workshop. The basic concepts that will be explored are: improvising grooves as a group, improvising melodies and harmony, soloing, conducting improvisations, exploration of musical parameters (rhythm, dynamics, textural improvisation, articulation and harmony) and improvisation from non-musical sources (words, visual cues, emotions, movement). Each individual workshop is improvised based on the needs of the group and the lessons that spontaneously occur. The students will use these concepts to analyze and focus on their relationships to work, art and everyday life to recognize their own creativity. The students will perform evaluations and apply constructive criticism. (This workshop is a four part series offering)

Name of Workshop: Story Telling with Smart Phones (Video)

Workshop Description: Video is an essential vehicle for communication in the creative industry. This workshop explores the art of visual storytelling and provides an overview of the technical foundation in how to effectively use a smart phone like a camera and use other tools like lighting to convey the story being told. The workshop also examines the art of photography and visual media, and how the art form as evolved into the smartphone. The students will learn technical skills to create images and videos with current technology.

Workshop Description: This foundation workshop explains how to make a modern record from beginning to end and illustrates current and creative “DIY” audio production techniques based on traditional recording theory and practices. This workshop provides the students with an opportunity to observe a professional in the field in the art of record making. The students will focus on the key elements in how music is recorded, mixed, mastered, produced and delivered to market. A brief history of record making and music production will be examined as well. The 3 hour workshsp goal is for the students to observe the instructor in making a digital modern record.

Name of Workshop: This Appreciation workshop will examine and analyze audio recording, production, mixing techniques and provide students with experience in the recording traditions of these three legendary music producers: Daniel Lanois, Rick Rubin and Brian Eno. The students will focus on understanding these producer’s microphone placement, audio signal flow, environments in which their records were recorded and the relationship to the artists they produced. The students will create and experiment with these three producer’s recording techniques. These producer’s career history, albums and recording studios will be explained. Study with David Gray PhD, audio engineer, music producer and multi-instrumentalist with over 20 years experience. (This workshop is a four part series offering)

Workshop Description: Music Appreciation seeks to inform the student about the beginnings of North American music, to explain 21th Century music in terms of the origins of the popular styles of blues, jazz, country, rock, and pop, and survey the Western "Classical" tradition from the middle ages to the 21th century. The class concludes with lectures on the significant music produced by popular artists musicians in the 21st century. Goals for the class range from raising awareness of the various elements, origins, and developments in music, as well as enhancing critical thinking skills of evaluating music and then putting a cognitive critique in writing. By the end of the workshop, the student should have the background for appreciating the major genres of music with which they are most likely to come into contact with, as well as having a deeper ability to appreciate the various primary elements of any musical creation and/or performance. Name of Workshop: Intro to West African Drumming

Total Hours: 3

Workshop Description: This introductory workshop delivers an applied, hands-on approach to African drumming techniques relevant in traditional and contemporary drumming styles in West Africa. The students will learn to perform diverse ceremonial and recreational music and key fundamental elements in West African rhythm, melody, form and structure. Students will experience traditional African oral learning methods, listening exercises and music analysis through rehearsals, discussions, readings and listening. Students will also become familiar with the construction and basic maintenance of African drums. The purpose of this course is to explore West African culture through drumming and music performance. This workshop offers practical hands-on instruction in selected drumming repertory from the countries Ghana, Togo, and Benin, West Africa. Students will be expected to learn hand and stick drumming techniques using a variety of African percussion instruments. Students will also learn to sing songs related to specific drumming traditions and understand integral dance styles related to the drumming. No history of drumming prerequisite required.

Name of Workshop: The Essentials of Digital Mixing

Workshop Description: This introductory workshop illustrates modern and creative audio mixing techniques based on traditional mixing theory and practices. It provides the students with hands-on-training in the art of mixing sound on IPad and Mac Laptop computers using Digital Audio Workstations and Pro Tools software platform. The students will focus on the key elements in which sound is mixed on a digital “In The Box” recording console. They will learn signal processing, and signal flow and mix multi-track sessions. The history of analog to digital mixing will be examined as well.

Workshop Description: This workshop melds traditional audio theory into creative and experimental recording techniques using contemporary technology - the IPad and the Mac Laptop. Students will engage in hands-on-training in the art of capturing sound with a portable recording device preparing them for both contemporary and future recording scenarios. Students will also focus on the roles and the dynamics of personnel in the recording environment to prepare themselves to adapt and contribute in the modern audio recording marketplace.

• Construct a modern approach to audio recording based on both historical and 21st century techniques and philosophies.
• Explain the roles and functions, as well as the relationships of personnel involved in the audio recording process.
• Demonstrate the differences in the sonic properties and recording options for common instruments (the voice, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, percussion and electronic keyboards).

Workshop Description: This introductory workshop illustrates a modern approach to music theory and how it is applied to the modern audio market place. The students will learn to create energy, emotion and mood through their own compositions in the recording process. This workshop will also provide the students with hands-on-training on a musical instrument within an IPad and/or Mac Laptop computer. The students will focus on the key fundamental elements in music such as rhythm, harmony, melody, form and texture. The students will learn the basics in ear training and how it is applied to audio engineering.

• Understand energy, emotion and mood in music and sound.

Name of Workshop: The Mixing Technique

Total Hours: 6

Workshop Description: This workshop explores and develops the art and science of mixing a multi-track recording into a stereo file ready for mastering. An examination of the history of decades of tools and techniques developed from mixing in the analogue domain will reveal and develop the background knowledge necessary to move into the present methods of mixing entirely “in the box” (in the computer). This will be followed by learning newer tools and techniques previously impossible in the analogue domain. Upon completion of this course, students will have the technical and artistic knowledge necessary to develop compelling mixes in a Mac based Digital Audio Workstation.

Success completion on this workshop will enable the student to:

• Construct a current approach to mixing an audio recording built from an understanding of the past approaches in analog mixing and culminating into 21st century tools, techniques and philosophies.
• Incorporate the understanding and ability to utilize the signal flow adopted from an analogue mixing console and outboard equipment now employed in a Digital Audio Workstation environment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the various signal processing tools utilized in mixing a multi-track recording and how these tools have migrated from the analogue domain into the digital realm.
• Utilize the latest digital hardware and software tools (ipad controllers, control surfaces, plugins, various DAW formats).
• Practice mixing techniques that have developed in various genres of music.
• Deliver a compelling stereo mix from a multi-track recording using a digital audio workstation and control surface.

Name of Workshop: Electro Acoustic Audio Creation

Total Hours: 6

Workshop Description: This workshop will provide a brief history of the basic themes and elements in electroacoustic music from both the classic school (e.g., Cage, Eno, Schaeffer) and the modern school (e.g., Deadmau5, Teebs, Daft Punk). The students will work within apps to compose and manipulate soundscapes with techniques such as sampling, electronic composition, IOS recording and found-sound organization among others. In addition, students will build their own personal sonic brand by studying, analyzing and emulating a broad array of styles within the electroacoustic realm (e.g., hip hop, dance, ambient). Students will also focus on the newly-evolving role of the sonic producer of electroacoustic music to prepare them to adapt and contribute in the modern audio marketplace.

• Construct both classic and modern school electroacoustic sonic productions with the IPad and apps.

Workshop Description: Students will learn the essentials of audio production, including how to achieve good levels, how to use broadcast microphones and how to digitally edit audio for Radio, Podcasts, Youtube and Television Productions. This course is a combination of hands-on and lecture components.

• Explain the operation of conventional broadcast audio equipment.
• Describe the audio signal path taken from source to final destination.
• Employ appropriate audio software and hardware to record and play back various sound sources, as well as editing and mixing sound files to create more complex projects.

Workshop Description: This foundational workshop offers a practical, hands-on approach to drum and beat making, catering to the current music landscape. Students will learn to construct, perform, and record various grooves for contemporary popular music. The workshop covers essential components of the acoustic drum set, beat programming, world rhythms, drum machines, sampling, and groove looping. Analyzing both classic rhythmic theory and drum programming exercises, students will become familiar with creating and manipulating beats using digital samplers and software instruments on Iphones/smart phones and iPads/tablets and laptop computers.

Workshop Description: The introduction workshop will cover audio creation techniques, studio recording, sound manipulation, sound design, dialogue and foley applications for digital gaming. Students will observe audio creation concepts such as recording sounds, applying effects, proper integration of audio and mixing techniques particular for the non-linear gaming platform. Students will assist the instructor in building a soundscape for various aspects of a modern game and leave this course with a basic foundation of knowledge in the audio creation for a digital game. This 9 hour workshop is for the students to observe and assist the instructor in creating audio for a digital game.

Name of Workshop: Learning Live Sound and Recording

Workshop Description: This workshop teaches students hands-on engineering techniques that will give the students practical skills needed in order to obtain employment in today’s live music venues. The students learn the foundations in live mixing consoles, microphones, monitors, DI boxes and much more. The small workshop and student to instructor ratio ensure the time needed to order to prepare for the world of professional live sound engineering.

Successful completion of this workshop will enable the student to:

• Identify important elements within live sound engineering, including the identification of the types of sounds, acoustical environments and how they work in a professional mix.
• Build a high-quality mix using analog and digital mixing consoles and basic PA systems.
