Workshop Description: Music Appreciation seeks to inform the student about the beginnings of North American music, to explain 21th Century music in terms of the origins of the popular styles of blues, jazz, country, rock, and pop, and survey the Western "Classical" tradition from the middle ages to the 21th century. The class concludes with lectures on the significant music produced by popular artists musicians in the 21st century. Goals for the class range from raising awareness of the various elements, origins, and developments in music, as well as enhancing critical thinking skills of evaluating music and then putting a cognitive critique in writing. By the end of the workshop, the student should have the background for appreciating the major genres of music with which they are most likely to come into contact with, as well as having a deeper ability to appreciate the various primary elements of any musical creation and/or performance. (This workshop is a four part series offering)

Workshop Learning Outcomes:

Successful completion of this workshop will enable the student to:

  • Identify elements in music, which define style, genre and period.
  • Develop listening skills concerning the various elements of music.
  • Develop a vocabulary necessary to communicate the attributes of music as they relate to the various elements in music and historical periods.
  • Define historical style periods in Western music.
  • Identify Popular artists and musicians and music related to style periods in western music.

Name of Workshop: This Appreciation workshop will examine and analyze audio recording, production, mixing techniques and provide students with experience in the recording traditions of these three legendary music producers: Daniel Lanois, Rick Rubin and Brian Eno. The students will focus on understanding these producer’s microphone placement, audio signal flow, environments in which their records were recorded and the relationship to the artists they produced. The students will create and experiment with these three producer’s recording techniques. These producer’s career history, albums and recording studios will be explained. Study with David Gray PhD, audio engineer, music producer and multi-instrumentalist with over 20 years experience. (This workshop is a four part series offering)

Successful completion of this workshop will enable the student to:

Workshop Description: This introductory workshop delivers an applied, hands-on approach to African drumming techniques relevant in traditional and contemporary drumming styles in West Africa. The students will learn to perform diverse ceremonial and recreational music and key fundamental elements in West African rhythm, melody, form and structure. Students will experience traditional African oral learning methods, listening exercises and music analysis through rehearsals, discussions, readings and listening. Students will also become familiar with the construction and basic maintenance of African drums. The purpose of this course is to explore West African culture through drumming and music performance. This workshop offers practical hands-on instruction in selected drumming repertory from the countries Ghana, Togo, and Benin, West Africa. Students will be expected to learn hand and stick drumming techniques using a variety of African percussion instruments. Students will also learn to sing songs related to specific drumming traditions and understand integral dance styles related to the drumming. No history of drumming prerequisite required.

Workshop Learning Outcomes:

Success completion on this workshop will enable the student to:

  • Illustrate African drumming through performance.
  • Develop a greater understanding of West African culture, history and music.
  • Discuss and assemble musical forms and theory used in West African drumming. Example: call and response patterns, multi--layered part performance, compositional form and structure.
  • Identify and describe key African languages, traditions and relationships between spoken language and drumming.
  • Distinguish between various historical and social practices associated with performance in African drumming traditions.
  • Discuss the construction and maintenance of a variety of West African drums.
  • Develop an appreciation for teamwork and community spirit inherent in the West African performance practice.
