Name of Workshop: This Appreciation workshop will examine and analyze audio recording, production, mixing techniques and provide students with experience in the recording traditions of these three legendary music producers: Daniel Lanois, Rick Rubin and Brian Eno. The students will focus on understanding these producer’s microphone placement, audio signal flow, environments in which their records were recorded and the relationship to the artists they produced. The students will create and experiment with these three producer’s recording techniques. These producer’s career history, albums and recording studios will be explained. Study with David Gray PhD, audio engineer, music producer and multi-instrumentalist with over 20 years experience. (This workshop is a four part series offering)

Workshop Learning Outcomes:

Successful completion of this workshop will enable the student to:

  • Discover production techniques of music producers Daniel Lanois, Rick Rubin and Brian Eno.
  • Analyze the different roles these record producers play in the studio.
  • Carry out various styles of mixing and tracking techniques these producers employ throughout their careers.
  • Analyze their choice of microphones and microphone applications.
  • Discuss and explain their sound, the history of their recordings, their effect on music and music history.
  • Research, examine and differentiate between the different styles of these producers and their recording techniques.
  • Demonstrate and produce these four producer’s innovative and legendary studio techniques.
